Need to check DIGIPIN for your home, a shop or a field with no street address? This digital pin turns any location in India into a 10-character code, and the tool above reads your device's GPS fix or the numbers you type and returns it in a second. Because the digital address system is run by the government, the code you get is the same one India Post uses, with accuracy down to a cell of roughly 3.8 metres.

What Is DIGIPIN? India's Digital Postal Index Number

DIGIPIN stands for Digital Postal Index Number. It is a geo-coded addressing system from the Department of Posts that gives a unique 10-character code to every 4m x 4m square of the country. India Post built it with IIT Hyderabad and the NRSC, the remote-sensing centre that works under ISRO.

Each alphanumeric code is calculated from a position alone, so the scheme is open-source, interoperable with any mapping software, and stores nothing about you. It sits within the National Geospatial Policy 2022 and the DHRUVA programme, which aims to make your digital address as usable as a street address across geospatial and service platforms. Think of it as a digital addressing system layered on top of what you already have.

How DIGIPIN Differs from a PIN Code

A six-digit PIN identifies a post office's whole service area, often a large neighborhood or a group of towns. A DIGIPIN identifies one 16 square meter cell. The 6-digit PIN code stays on your letters and your traditional address doesn't change; DIGIPIN adds a permanent, precise layer on top of the postal address you already use.

How to Check DIGIPIN for Any Location

The official Know Your DIGIPIN portal (dac.indiapost.gov.in) and the tool on this page work the same way. Open it in a browser on your phone for the best location access, since a phone's satellite fix is sharper than a laptop's Wi-Fi estimate.

    • Tap Allow when the browser asks to use your location.
    • On the official portal, read the privacy policy and tap I Consent.
    • Press Get My DIGIPIN, then copy or share the code that appears.

Find Your DIGIPIN with Location Permission

Location permission lets the page read your Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) position. Stand outdoors, away from tall walls, and wait a few seconds before you generate a DIGIPIN: GNSS readings drift by several metres indoors, which can drop you into the neighbouring cell. Once you have it, you can share the code by message.

Use the Interactive Map or Latitude and Longitude

No signal, or checking a place you aren't standing in? Click the interactive map, or type the latitude and longitude yourself. Values copied from Google Maps (long-press a point) paste straight into this DIGIPIN location tool.

    Decode DIGIPIN Back to Coordinates

The conversion also runs in reverse. To decode a DIGIPIN, enter its 10 characters and the tool returns the lat-long of the centre of that cell. The output is the geographic coordinates of a cell centre, not the sender's exact GPS coordinates, so a code someone sends you lands within about 3 metres of where they stood. A decoded code is also sharable as a DIGIPIN QR code.

DIGIPIN Code Architecture and the 4x4 Grid

The code architecture is a hierarchical grid system built from 16 symbols: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, C, F, J, K, L, M, P and T. Each of the 16 alphanumeric characters labels one cell of a four-by-four split, and every character added narrows the cell by four in each direction. This hierarchical encoding is how one position gets encoded as one code, with no address database or street-level geocoding involved. At each level the tool picks a row and a column:

    row=3− ⌊lat−latminΔlat⌋ , col= ⌊lon−lonminΔlon⌋

Here Δ is the current cell's height or width divided by 4. After ten splits the cell edge is:

    Δ10= 36∘410 ≈0.0000343∘≈3.8m
4 x 4 grid of DIGIPIN symbols over India's bounding box with the Charminar's level-1 cell 4 highlighted
The first character of 422-537-8J2J comes from the level-1 grid: the Charminar sits in row 2, column 1.

Bounding Box and Coordinate Reference System

The bounding box runs from 2.5°N to 38.5°N and from 63.5°E to 99.5°E, measured in the EPSG:4326 coordinate reference system (the WGS84 datum that satellite receivers use). That square covers the mainland plus the maritime Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), so islands and offshore rigs get codes too. Geographical coordinates outside it have no DIGIPIN.

    Worked Example: Charminar to 422-537-8J2J

Take the Charminar in Hyderabad at 17.361564°N, 78.474665°E. At Level-1 the latitude falls in row 2 and the longitude in column 1 of the 4x4 grid, which is the symbol 4. The tool then repeats the split inside that cell: 16 subregions at level 2, 16 subdivisions inside each of those, and so on through 10 levels. The table traces the full 10-level hierarchy.

Charminar DIGIPIN 422-537-8J2J, level by level
    LevelSymbolRow, columnCell height
    142, 1about 1,000 km
    221, 2about 250 km
    321, 2about 63 km
    452, 2about 16 km
    531, 1about 3.9 km
    671, 3about 980 m
    780, 3about 245 m
    8J1, 0about 61 m
    921, 2about 15 m
    10J1, 0about 3.8 m

Each step adds one level of precision. The final grid cell at Level-10 is about 3.8 m by 3.6 m, and the format puts hyphens after the third and sixth characters: 422-537-8J2J.

Every character narrows the cell by four in each direction until the 10th level reaches about 3.8 m.

How Precise Is the National Addressing Grid?

A cell is roughly a 4x4 meter square, so the code can pinpoint a single doorway, but it can only turn a precise location into a code if the position you feed it is precise. Watch the decimals: four decimal places is about 11 m, coarser than one cell. Round the Charminar to 17.3616, 78.4747 and you get 422-537-8J2C, a different cell. Enter at least five decimals, ideally six. The conversion itself is on-device, so it adds no error of its own.

Bar chart comparing coordinate rounding error at 3 to 6 decimals with the 3.8 m DIGIPIN cell and the code each returns
Rounding the Charminar's coordinates to four decimals already returns a different code; five or more keeps it in the right cell.

Why One Building Can Have Several DIGIPIN Codes

A house with a 12 m frontage spans three or four cells, so its front gate, back door and rooftop can each carry different DIGIPIN codes. Pick the cell at the entrance a visitor should use and share that one. One wrong character sends someone to another cell, many kilometres away if the error is early in the code, so read it back. Unlike landmarks such as "opposite the temple", the code marks the exact location for good.

    Where the DIGIPIN System Helps

Because the code is a digital location identifier rather than a description, the DIGIPIN system plugs into navigation apps, public service delivery and smart city planning.

    Last-Mile Delivery and Logistics

For e-commerce and logistics firms, last-mile delivery is where failed deliveries happen. A courier with your code drives to the cell instead of phoning for directions, so parcels stop coming back marked "address not found". Every parcel label can carry it, and ride-hailing pickups work the same way.

    Emergency Services and Rural Addressing

Rural addressing is the bigger change. Many villages and remote areas have no street names or house numbers, yet every one of their cells has a code.

    • Emergency services: an ambulance, police or fire crew can be sent to the cell, not the nearest landmark.
    • Disaster management: relief teams can log each damaged location by code during a flood or other disaster.
    • Government welfare: schemes can reach households in India that lack a formal address.

    Property and Real Estate Records

In real estate, a code per plot speeds up address verification and property surveys, and it drops neatly into GIS layers alongside land records.

Get Your DIGIPIN Free, Privately and Offline

The service is free, with no sign-up. The algorithm is open source and published on GitHub, and an API lets developers convert codes in bulk. A code describes a place, not a person, so it holds no personal data, and converting one needs no personal information.

    Can You Use DIGIPIN Offline?

Yes. Encoding is pure arithmetic, so it runs without a connection once the page or app has loaded, and a saved code works without signal. You still need a satellite fix, which needs no mobile data, to know where you are.

    DIGIPIN vs Google Plus Codes

Google Plus Codes cover the whole world; DIGIPIN covers only India and its seas, and it is run by India Post rather than a company. When you check your DIGIPIN for a spot in India, both codes point to the same place, but only DIGIPIN belongs to the postal network. Abroad, you'll need latitude and longitude instead.

    Get quick answers about DIGIPIN

    What is a DIGIPIN?

DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is a 10-character code from India Post that points to a roughly 4 × 4 metre square anywhere in India. It works alongside your regular 6-digit PIN code, which only covers a whole area.

How is DIGIPIN different from a PIN code?

A PIN code covers a post office area that can include thousands of homes. A DIGIPIN identifies one small square, so it can point to a single house, shop or gate.

Is it free to find my DIGIPIN here?

Yes. The converter is free, needs no sign-up, and calculates your DIGIPIN in your browser. To suggest your PIN code, it sends us your location rounded to about 100 metres, which we never store.

    Will my DIGIPIN ever change?

No. A DIGIPIN is calculated from latitude and longitude, so the same spot always gives the same code, even if roads or building names change.
